On Tuesday, October 23 from 4:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. the EPPD, along with officers from the Airport, Bloomington, Richfield and Edina, will be on the lookout in Eden Prairie for motorists not wearing seatbelts. Motorists in violation of seatbelts laws may face a fine of $25.
Minnesota law states that all passengers in a vehicle must wear a seatbelt. If a passenger is not wearing a seatbelt and they are 14 years old or younger, the driver can be cited. If a passenger not wearing a seatbelt is 15 or older, the passenger can be cited.
While the overall seatbelt compliance rate in Minnesota is 94%, last week a similar seatbelt blitz was held in Eden Prairie and 64 cars were stopped for seatbelt violations. In 2011 in Minnesota, half of the people who died in car accidents were not wearing seatbelts. So be safe and avoid a citation by buckling up today and everyday!
The seatbelt enforcement blitzes are funded by a state grant program called Toward Zero Deaths.
