On Tuesday morning seven EPPD police officers and sergeants patrolled the Eden Prairie High School student parking lots. They weren’t looking for criminal behavior, instead they were looking to reward good behavior. And they found a lot to reward.
The officers were looking to see if the students were wearing seatbelts while driving to school that morning. Of the 127 drivers they had contact with, 100% of them were wearing seatbelts. Those drivers received free music download cards donated by AAA. The students were appreciative of the reward and the officers were happy to see such great results which also gave them an opportunity to have positive interactions with the students.
Seatbelt use in teenagers is particularly important as traffic crashes are the number-one killer of Minnesota teens — each year, more than 30 teens (ages 16–19) are killed on Minnesota roads.
Way to go EPHS students!
