On May 15 at 2: 15 p.m. an Eden Prairie woman who was mowing her lawn noticed a man she did not recognize walk out of her neighbor’s backyard carrying a suitcase. Earlier that afternoon the woman had noticed a suspicious car in the neighborhood. Those two incidents were enough to make her call 911 to report what she had observed. Officers arrived at the neighbor’s home and found that one of the back doors had been pried open. While going through the house they found several dresser drawers in the master bedroom that look disturbed.
Officers met with the homeowners who inventoried the items that were missing from their home. Upon investigation, detectives learned that some of the missing jewelry had been sold to a jewelry business. Detectives went to the business and recovered the missing jewelry but found that the stones in the jewelry had been removed.
Detectives then reviewed store video of the transaction at the business and recognized one of the suspects as a burglar who was known to the EPPD. The suspect had also sold jewelry at the same store earlier in the month. The jewelry sold that time matched jewelry that was stolen during a burglary in Minnetonka the week before.
Next, detectives met with the neighbor who identified the suspect in a photo ID line-up. The EPPD then notified local law enforcement agencies to be on the lookout for the suspect and his vehicle. Two days later Bloomington Police stopped the suspect’s vehicle and turned him over to EPPD detectives.
After obtaining a search warrant, detectives searched his vehicle and found jewelry, drugs, drug paraphernalia, a handgun that had been stolen in a previous Eden Prairie burglary and other miscellaneous items that detectives suspect were stolen in other burglaries in the metro area. The suspect was arrested and charged with 2nd degree burglary, theft and 3rd degree criminal damage to property.
Upon further investigation, detectives learned that the suspect was working with several other people to commit home burglaries throughout the metro area. At least two other suspects have been arrested and charged with burglary, possession of stolen property and damage to property.
Thanks to the observant neighbor who did the right thing by reporting the suspicious behavior, and to thorough detective work, this ring of home burglars has been arrested.
