Walk to End Distracted Driving this Saturday

This Saturday August 5th, you can help bring an end to distracted driving by simply walking around Purgatory Creek Park with hundreds of other concerned citizens at the 10th Raksha 5k Walk/Run for Distraction-free Driving.

The event benefits the Shreya R. Dixit Memorial Foundation which was started in memory of Shreya R. Dixit, an Eden Prairie resident who was killed in a distracted driving crash while on her way home from college in 2007. The Foundation’s mission is “to raise awareness of distracted driving, educate our community on safe and distraction-free driving and encourage drivers to be mindful of the safety of other drivers and passengers on the road.”

Prior to the event, the Foundation’s Distraction-free Driving Club and Eden Prairie High School’s DECA Team will put up a multitude of yellow #9 balloons at major intersections and neighborhoods in Eden Prairie in remembrance of victims of distracted driving. The number nine represents the average daily fatality count in the United States from distracted driving.

The walk is this Saturday at Purgatory Creek Park, located at 13001 Technology Drive and will feature Richard Anderson, former Delta CEO and current Amtrak CEO as the event’s guest speaker. Participants can register online for the 5k run/walk.
