Our City Council and city staff met jointly with the Eden Prairie School Board and school district staff at our City Council work session this past Tuesday night. Even though the City Council and the School Board have met regularly in the past- it has been at least 3 years since the two elected bodies last got together. The first day of school was as good a day as any to start meeting again.
Since there were several newer elected officials and staff members at the table since the groups last met together (including Mayor Tyra-Lukens, Board Chair Jacobus, Superintendent Tryggestad and yours truly), we purposely decided to structure the meeting rather loosely. Following brief school district and city updates, the remainder of our time was spent discussing areas of mutual interest. More specifically, we wanted to explore the projects and initiatives that we can work on together.
A few examples that came from our discussion included:
- A Collaborative Community Healthy Eating and Active Living Project;
- Student Readiness Initiatives (covering the spectrum from 1st grade readiness to post-secondary vocational skills);
- Coordinated City-School Program and Facility Planning (think swimming pools and art centers); and
- Joint City-School Communication and Marketing
And I am sure there will be more …
The next step is for Superintendent Tryggestad and I to sit down and create a city-school action plan before we all meet again. I assume that next joint meeting will take place in early 2013. I am looking forward to it!
