20-40-15 Update

Over the past several years, the City has been working to complete the 20-40-15 initiative, aimed at improving energy efficiency in City facilities by 20 percent, improving the fuel efficiency of the City’s vehicle fleet by 40 percent and achieving these goals by the year 2015.

Phase three of this program was completed more than a year ago, and we are excited to report some of the most significant results of the 20-40-15 initiative to date.

As of October 2012, we have successfully

  • Reduced total energy consumption by almost 12-billion British Thermal Units (BTUs).
  • Increased overall energy efficiency by 15 percent.
  • Reduced annual carbon dioxide emissions by 2,000 metric tons.
  • Achieved nearly $200,000 in annual energy cost savings.

So here’s what our 20-40-15 report card looks like:

□   Eden Prairie is three-fourths of the way toward its goal of improving energy efficiency in City facilities by 20 percent.

□   Eden Prairie is three-fourths of the way toward its goal of improving the fuel efficiency of the City’s vehicle fleet by 40 percent.

□   Eden Prairie has three more years to accomplish these goals by year-end 2015.

Some of the projects being explored for the next phase of this initiative include:

  • Advanced energy recovery strategies for the Community Center ice rink cooling system, including recovery of waste heat from compressors, variable speed drives for pumps and fans, as well as numerous control additions and modifications.
  • The installation of energy-saving ceilings in the Community Center ice rinks.
  • The addition of geothermal cooling at the Water Treatment Plant.
  • Further investigation into solar panel energy at the City Center and Community Center.
  • The addition of a waste oil heating plant at the Maintenance Facility.
  • The addition of electric vehicles to the City’s fleet, as well as an electric vehicle charging station at City Center.

Watch for more updates as we progress toward the finish line of the 20-40-15 initiative!
