Annual Board and Commission Event

Last Wednesday evening we celebrated the work of our volunteer Board and Commission members.

Each spring we bring all current and outgoing Eden Prairie Board and Commission members together for an annual banquet to recognize their outstanding service to our City.  Eden Prairie has eight Boards and Commissions.  Our Senior Advisory Committee, which is not a Commssion, was also a part of the event.  All of these groups advise the City Council and the city staff on a plethora of important policy issues that affect our community.

Each year the agenda for the event is pretty much the same.  Following a social hour and meal, we host a keynote speaker prior to personally recognizing each outgoing Commission member for their volunteer service to the City.  We then recognize high school students that serve on our Commissions as part of the “Students on Commisisons” program.  

This year our keynote speaker was Steve Schussler.  Steve is well-known as the creator of one of the most successful themed restaurants ever- the Rainforest Cafe.  Since 2000, Steve has spent his time creating, developing, and owning several other themed restuarants throughout the country in addition to being an author, a branding expert, a teacher, and an entrepreneur.  

And now Steve is operating a new venue in Eden Prairie – the Green Acres Event Center.  On his own dime Steve has acquired and renovated the Goodrich-Remus barn on Pioneer Trail into an event center.  So far this has been a great adaptive reuse for a historic city structure.

 At the banquet, Steve had a nice message about the 5 P’s of business success- Personality, Product, Persistence, People, and Philanthropy.  I think the presentation was well received.
